PhD Business Student Position

The PhD Business School of Engineering Sciences is a broad range of research results on the international front in the basic subjects such as physics and mathematics, engineering mechanics with applications such as aerospace and automotive engineering. We also offer courses in engineering physics, mechanical engineering, automotive engineering and education, and "Open Entry" and a number of international programs of control.

The Flow Center Linn (www.flow.kth.se) organizes basic research in fluid mechanics at KTH and is one of the original twenty competencies centers founded by the Swedish Research Council (VR). The Centre was established with a vision of an outstanding environment for basic research in fluid mechanics, where innovative research leader is born and future research are encouraged to create.

Project

Group
PhD Business stability and transition countries in Central Linn flow to applications for a PhD position on the issue of stability behind a blunt body. Finding the geometry of the blunt bodies in various technical drawings, as mentioned, most vehicles, bridges and skyscrapers just a few, but is prone to an absolute instability when subjected to a simple main stream. This instability manifests itself in the form of vortices from alternate sides of the body with a fixed frequency for a given flow main shed. The vortices are clear and strong neck and can lead to devastating periodic lateral forces that can lead to structural vibration and fatigue of the material. Other breakdowns are caused by this instability, air resistance and the generation of sound. A better understanding of this instability is essential in the search for control methods that can solve the problem of vortex formation in the body.

In this PhD Business project the aim is to experimentally study the instability of wakes behind bluff bodies from a fundamental research point of view, both for the natural case as well as with various wake flow control methods applied. This is realized in a new experimental setup specially designed to perform parameter variations, which are most often not possible in usually fixed experimental geometries.

The goal is to enhance the understanding of how the initial conditions of the bluff body wake affects the flow instability behind bluff bodies and the effect of different means of flow control that are applied. Finding means to reduce or even kill the often devastating vortex shedding in the wake of bluff bodies can contribute to safer designs of structures and reduced energy consumption by vehicles.

Qualifications

We seek highly motivated candidates holding a Master of Science degree in engineering or applied physics, mechanical engineering applied mathematics or related areas, as well as good skills in oral and written communication in English. PhD Business Influence of wall roughness and particle adhesion on confined flows

Job description

Confined flows of colloidal suspensions are increasingly found in Lab-on-a-Chip applications. However many fundamental insights are still missing. This applies especially to the aspect of roughness of the confining walls, which can present itself as corrugations in the native wall material, or as particles that get adsorbed from the fluid. The local structure and dynamics of the fluid and consequently also its flow behavior, can be changed profoundly by the roughness. In particular a strong coupling between wall roughness and wall slip is expected. However, experimental studies on colloidal lengthscales have been scarce, and mechanistic insights are largely missing.

The project will focus on the dynamics of particles near walls with various types of roughnesses, with and without adhesiveness. Whether or not slip will occur, depends on a competition between geometric and thermodynamic ‘holding’ forces, and ‘disruptive’ forces related to the suspension rheology. Each of these aspects will be taken into account. Concentrated suspensions will be studied inside micro channels under the application of different flow strengths. Real-time CSLM will be used to visualize the particles’ structure and dynamics at the wall and in 3D across the channel. Cleanroom technology and silane chemistry will be used to obtain an independent control over wall roughness and stickiness, respectively.

One particular kind of roughness is obtained by fouling, which generally involves a progressive attachment of particles from the suspension to the wall. To understand the relation between fouling and wall slip, we will also do experiments in which the degree of surface coverage is actively controlled. For this we shall develop walls with embedded micro-electrodes, that can be switched on/off individually in order to let particles stick/unstick.

Requirements

For this challenging project we are looking for enthusiastic candidates with a background in physics, physical chemistry or chemical engineering. He or she should have relevant experience in at least one of the fields of rheology, colloids and microfluidics.
